Englo/Russian Translator is a simple utility that performs translation from the most common russian codepages to the so-called "Volapyuk" coding (phonetically-equivalent english letters) and vice versa. The following translation schemes are supported in version 1.0:

The utility differs from the most available competitors by the fact that it supports translations from "Volapyuk" coding. Thus it becomes possible to write russian texts even in software environment that lacks cyrillic support (e.g. pure versions of UNIX) - you can write in "Volapyuk" and translate it to KOI8/WIN1251 on the last stage.

The "Volapyuk" alphabet utilized by this utility slightly differs from the standard of American Congress Library. These differences were introduced because of the requirement of "unique one-way" correspondence between russian and "Volapyuk" alphabets. E.g. it was impossible to use the "congress standard" english letter 'E' for the 31st russian letter ('E oborotnoe') since it is already used for the 6th russian letter ('E').

As the result of all above-said the following "Volapyuk" alphabet is used:

capital letters:
  A B V G D E E ZH Z I J K L M N O P R S T U F H (KH) TZ CH SH W ~ Y ^ } YU YA

small letters:
  a b v g d e e zh z i j k l m n o p r s t u f h (kh) tz ch sh w ` y ' ] yu ya

The alternative representation of the 23rd letter - 'KH' was introduced to avoid misspelling in the words like "raskhozhdenie". In 2-letter representations of russian capital letters, the second letter's case may be changed to small (i.e. Zh==ZH etc.)

Since this utility is platform-independent and is mainly targeted to the various UNIX-based environments it is distributed in the form of source code in plain C. Author had successfully compiled and used it under the following software
environments:
